Chronology of Diplomatic Relations

Diplomatic relations between Georgia and the Republic of Poland were restored on April 28, 1992.

The Embassy of Georgia to the Republic of Poland opened in 2004.

The Embassy of the Republic of Poland to Georgia opened in 1997.

The main fields of cooperation

Georgia and the Republic of Poland enjoy multidimensional partnership and friendly relations covering wide range of areas. Poland, as one of the authors of the “Eastern Partnership" initiative, plays an important role in promoting Georgia’s European aspirations.

In 2015, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Georgia and the Republic of Poland signed a memorandum of understanding on establishing the `Tbilisi Conference`. The mentioned format of cooperation envisages experience and expertise sharing of Poland on the way of Georgia’s European and Euro-Atlantic integration.

Cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries has been developing successfully, including at the level of the Friendship Groups. In 2018 the joint Parliamentary Assembly was established which aims to institutionalize the relations and further strengthen parliamentary cooperation.

Number of international agreements have been signed between Georgia and Poland regulating cooperation in the fields of defense, economy, tourism, regional development, culture, education, health, etc.

Economic cooperation remains an important dimension in bilateral relations. Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Georgia and the Republic of Poland has been functioning since 2009.

Tourism represents yet another important area of cooperation, as Georgia has always been one of the favorite destinations for the Polish visitors.

Georgia is a recipient of the “Polish Aid” projects, implemented by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Poland. The priority areas of this program include the following areas: good governance, sustainable use of national resources, social welfare, regional development, etc.

Cooperation in the field of defense has been successfully developing, encompassing consultations on military-technical issues, joint trainings as well as the study visits.

Through numerous Polish scholarships, number of Georgian students are getting education at the leading Polish universities. Furthermore, different Line Ministries of Poland provide training courses for Georgian civil servants aimed at improving their professional skills.

In recent years, close partnerships have been established between many cities and regions of the two countries.

Cultural days are frequently organized both in Georgia and Poland. The two countries are often visited by various artists.

Archimandrite Grigol Peradze (later canonized as a Saint by the Georgian orthodox church), represents the unifying symbol of Georgia and Poland. Invited by the Polish side at the beginning of the 20th century, he served at the University of Warsaw, faculty of Theology. Grigol Peradze promoted the development of orthodox theological sciences in Poland and translated numerous works into Polish language. St. Gregory’s brotherhood is still present in Poland. It unifies young people, scientists and other representatives of intellectuals. There is a chapel of St. Grigol Peradze functioning in Warsaw.

Georgian military officers serving in the army of Poland sacrificed their lives during Warsaw uprising in 1944. In 2007 a memorial dedicated to the Georgian officers was put up in the Warsaw Uprising Museum.
