Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia on the deployment by the Russian Federation of C-300 anti-aircraft missile system on the territory of occupied Abkhazia

logoOn 11 August 2010 commander of the Russian air forces Alexander Zelin announced on the deployment by the Russian Federation of C-300 anti-aircraft missile system on the territory of occupied Abkhazia.

Absolutely beyond understanding are the aims that this extremely dangerous provocative step may serve, which poses a threat not only to the Black Sea region but also, to the security of Europe as a whole. It provides clear evidence that the Kremlin continues its policy of military build-up on Georgia's occupied territories with the goal of escalating tension in the aforesaid regions.

The deployment of C-300 anti-aircraft missile system on the territory of occupied Abkhazia is a demonstrative example of reinforcing the military dimension of Russia's imperial policy of "spheres of influence" and an attempt to revive its colonialist past.

Of highest concern is the fact that inappropriate weapons that have fallen into the hands of wrong people will, based on the statement of commander of the Russian air forces Alexander Zelin, put into jeopardy the security of civil aviation as well.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia insists that the international community and international organizations take decisive measures to make Russia abandon its policy of military build-up on Georgia's occupied territories and fully comply with its international commitments, including the ceasefire agreement of 12 August 2008.
