Giorgi Kvirikashvili – Even the most biased broadcasting policy can bring much less harm to the country than our partners’ questions with respect to media freedom in Georgia"

Georgian Vice Prime Minister, Foreign Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili answered a question of journalists regarding the Rustavi 2 Company. According to the Vice Prime Minister, media freedom is the Georgian Government’s essential value – a principle to which the Georgian Government remains deeply committed. It is important for the court to do everything to ensure that our partners have no questions with respect to this case.

„On the Rustavi 2 case, I’d like to point out four issues.

First:  yesterday I saw there was a scuffle in the street between Businessman Giorgi Kodua (brother of the former head of the Constitutional Security Department, Erekle Kodua) and a group of young men. From the very start I’d like to ask and call upon everyone to make maximum efforts to prevent emotions from spilling into the streets as this may have very bad consequences, which is totally unacceptable. I am confident that the law-enforcing authorities will take all relevant lawful actions to prevent such cases.

Second: circulation of videos showing the violence is absolutely inadmissible to me. It is a throwback to the horrible period in the past, which our country had to go through. We need to have this chapter closed once and for all. I don’t know who is doing all this, it’s obviously not in the interests of the government. People who do it, no matter where they are, what they are or which party they belong to, such actions amount to destroying the psyche, including that of young people, who may be deeply affected by only being shown the tragedy one part of our population had to go through. I fully condemn the acts of public showing of the content via the Internet, as well as in the cities or districts.

Third: media freedom is the ultimate value, which should guide any government. Our government is definitely guided by this value. I assure you all that everything will be done to ensure that there shall be, and there is no interference in the broadcasting policy of any media company.  I don’t know who will win the case, I’m not familiar with legal details of the matter. But whoever may be the winner, even the most biased broadcasting policy can bring much less harm to the country than a doubt that may arise among our friends and partners with respect to media freedom in the country.

Fourth: I now want to call upon Rustavi 2 executives, as well as upon all those people who oppose the views of the Rustavi 2 management team, that the country must finally reach the point when court decisions, whether we like them or not, will be binding on all of us. On the other hand, the court should also do its utmost to avoid ambiguity and existence of unanswered questions from our partners, our friends, even if this requires additional elements of transparency and legitimacy“-Giorgi Kvirikashvili said.
