The Georgian Foreign Ministry has welcomed the extension of the EUMM mandate

The Georgian Foreign Ministry welcomes the decision of the EU Council to extend the mandate of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia and reaffirms its readiness to continue close co-operation with the Head of the Mission.

The Georgian Government attaches paramount importance to the activities of the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia. Being the only international mechanism in place in the territory of Georgia, the EUMM represents an instrument for the prevention of possible escalation of the situation and is therefore a firm guarantee of security and stability.

Despite the international community's repeated calls, regrettably, the EU Monitoring Mission is still deprived of the possibility to exercise its mandate throughout the entire territory of Georgia and to carry out monitoring in Georgia's occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali, which is a gross violation of the Ceasefire Agreement of 12 August 2008.

By decision of the EU Council, the mandate of the EUMM in Georgia was extended for two years, until 14 December 2016.
