Statement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia on the 67th anniversary of the victory over fascism

On the 8th of May 2012, the world celebrates the 67th anniversary of the victory over fascism. This noteworthy date represents an unprecedented manifestation of solidarity and unity of the nations and the states of the world in their heroic fight for the universal values through which the mankind achieved an honorable victory over a deadly threat.

The tragic events of the Second World War demonstrated the outmost necessity for setting up a new international legal system which would avert the possibility of reoccurrence of similar global cataclysms in the future and would serve as the guarantee of peace and stability in the world.

The mankind paid an enormous price for its glorious victory over the fascism as the Second World War claimed the lives of millions of people, including hundreds of thousands of our compatriots. In the Second World War Georgian soldiers were sacrificing their lives for such universal ideals as freedom, justice and peace outside the borders of their homeland. The Georgian people can be rightly proud of its soldiers who have contributed a fair share in this collective effort.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry wishes to pay homage to the memory of the soldiers fallen in their fight against fascism and to that of the numerous innocent civilian victims of the Second World War. We would like to once again express our profound gratitude to the veterans for their dedication and contribution to our country and the world.
