Statement of the MFA on the Debate in the Council of Europe regarding the protection of the cultural heritage sites in Abkhazia, Georgia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia commends the debates on the state of the cultural heritage sites in the Russian occupied regions of Georgia that took place on 15 February 2012 in the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. This debate was conducted upon the request of the Georgian non-governmental organizations (ICOMOS Georgia and Georgian Heritage) to inspect closely the situation with the cultural heritage in Abkhazia, Georgia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia.

The Ministry welcomes the fact that during the discussions at the 1134th meeting many delegations reiterated firm stance on the importance of preserving cultural heritage and protecting the monuments in Georgia's occupied regions. It was overwhelmingly stressed at the session that the situation with the cultural heritage sites in the occupied regions should be reflected in the next regular consolidated report of the CoE Secretary General on the conflict in Georgia, due before the May 2012 Ministerial meeting of the Committee of Ministers. Ministry of Foreign Affairs hopes that the Secretary General of the CoE will follow up on this debate in due course and the relevant topics will be adequately reflected in the consolidated report.
