Statement of the Georgian Foreign Ministry in reaction to an attack on a Georgian police checkpoint near the village of Ganmukhuri, Zugdidi district

On 4 March 2012 at 03:20 local time, six members of the Russian forces currently occupying the region of Abkhazia, Georgia, opened fire with automatic weapons and an RPG-7 rocket-propelled grenade launcher towards a Georgian police checkpoint near the village of Ganmukhuri, Zugdidi district. No casualties were reported during the shoot-out, which lasted ten minutes, and the attackers fled back into occupied Abkhazia.

This armed provocation once again justifies Georgia's demand that, in order to avoid destabilization in the region, it is necessary to make Russia commit to the non-use of force, co-operate with the European Union Monitoring Mission (EUMM; as Georgia is doing), fulfill its international commitments (notably the 12 August 2008 ceasefire agreement), and fully and immediately withdraw from Georgian territory.
