Statement of the Georgian Foreign Ministry regarding the Russian Defence Minister's visit to occupied Abkhazia

On 13 July 2011, the Russian Defence Minister, Mr. Anatoly Serdyukov, paid a visit to occupied Abkhazia in violation of Georgian state borders and with the goal of inspecting the Russian-established occupation regime.

The Russian Defence Minister's so-called "visit" to occupied Abkhazia clearly indicates that Russia never intended to fulfill its international commitments - notably those of the 12 August 2008 ceasefire agreement - and that it will never do so.

In breach of these commitments, Russia is intensively engaged in a military build-up in Georgia's occupied territories. This includes the accelerated construction of military bases, the concentration of military contingents (including divisions of both the defence ministry and the federal security service) and the deployment of rocket systems. This military build-up has resulted in the deployment of military units in Georgia's occupied territories, laying bare Russia's aggressive policy with respect to Georgia.

Moreover, the visit of a Russian official represents yet another failed attempt at ethnic cleansing and the forcible violation of a sovereign country's borders through military occupation.

The Georgian Foreign Ministry strongly protests, and demands that Russia desist from the militarization of Georgia's occupied territories and that the Russian government commit to the non-use of force as well as to the full de-occupation of Georgian territory.
