Statement of the Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the Russian occupation troops' recent attack on the local population of a village in the Gali District

On 10 June 2011, at about 05:00 local time, Russian occupation troops and Abkhazian gangs entered the village of Pichori in the Gali District and abused and physically assaulted the local population and detained some of the village's inhabitants. The identity of some of the detainees has already been established; they are Tamaz and Temur Orzhania, Gogi Shamatava and Mamuka Baghbaia.

By carrying out such provocative actions, the Russian Federation continues to worsen the situation in Georgia's occupied regions. These events clearly indicate the extent to which human rights and fundamental freedoms are being violated by the Russian occupation regime.

The Georgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs calls upon the international community - and, in particular, upon the UN, OSCE and Council of Europe - to take action in order to prevent the Russian Federation from persecuting ethnic Georgians in Georgia's occupied territories and in order to ensure that the human rights and fundamental freedoms of local populations are protected.
