Georgia-EU Association Agreement has come in force!

On 1 July 2016 the EU-Georgia Association Agreement came into force in compliance with its Article 431, after the EU Foreign Affairs Council announced its decision to end the procedures needed for ratification of the AA. The laborious process of ratification lasted less than two years and involved the European Parliament, 28 EU Member States and the legislative bodies of Georgia. The ratification of the Association Agreement in such short terms points to the EU Member States’ firm support for Georgia’s European path.

1 July is yet another important date in the history of Georgia-EU relations, after the signature of the Association Agreement. With the ratification, the Association Agreement officially becomes a major legal framework for an absolutely new and higher level of co-operation with the European Union. As of today, all provisions of the Association Agreement will be fully in force and Georgia’s political association and economic integration process aimed at introducing European political, trade-economic, social and legal standards, will become irreversible and will continue at a full pace.

The Association Agreement between the European Union and the European Atomic Energy Community and their Member States, of the one part, and Georgia, of the other part was signed on 27 June 2014 and began to be provisionally applied as of 1 September 2014.
